Why Tinder’s First Sunday of the Year, better known as 'Dating Sunday', is a Game-Changer for singles and the top words you need to know for dating in the year ahead thanks to its revamped Dating Dictionary.

With over 10% more matches and 20% more messages sent compared to the rest of the year1, the first Sunday of the year proves to be the ultimate kickstart for your 2025 dating life.

SYDNEY - 19 December 2024 - The busiest day of the year for dating apps a.k.a, ‘Dating Sunday’, is almost upon us. In 2025, the much anticipated day falls on 5 January, and marks the first Sunday of the new year. According to Tinder’s Year in Swipe™ report, 2025 is all about embracing clarity, connection, and spontaneity with trends like Loud Looking, Kiss-met, and Nano-ships. Loud Looking empowers singles to confidently state their desires, Kiss-met celebrates those magical, spontaneous moments, and Nano-ships highlight the significance of even the smallest romantic connections.

‘Dating Sunday’ has emerged as the golden moment to kick start these new trends as singles dive headfirst into their resolutions to meet new people, explore fresh experiences, and perhaps even find their perfect match. In fact, internal Tinder data2 reveals that the first Sunday of the year sees a surge in activity like no other day of the year.

  • Swipe® activity is nearly 20% higher on Tinder than the rest of the year.
  • The number of likes on Tinder was 15% higher than the rest of the year.
  • Singles are in conversation mode, being approximately 12% more likely to have a conversation with the number of messages sent on Tinder being nearly 20% higher than the rest of the year.
  • The pursuit of connection pays off, as Tinder users on average experience over 10% more matches - with over 356 matches per second - than the rest of the year
  • Responding faster than ever, Tinder users replied to messages 2 hours 16 minutes quicker than on last year’s Dating Sunday (i.e. 2023).

To celebrate these resolutions and ahead of this year’s Peak Dating Season (January 1st to February 14th), Tinder has released an updated version of its award-winning Dating Dictionary, incorporating 56 new words and phrases that reflect the evolving language of Gen Z’s and modern dating. The dictionary includes everything from Alpha Femme to Winter Arc, as well as Golden Retriever Boyfriend, Loud Looking, Kissmet, Nano-Ships and more!

Director of Communications at Tinder Australia, Kirsty Dunn comments, “Dating Sunday is such a monumental day in the dating calendar year and we’re excited to release the second installment of our Dating Dictionary - the ultimate cheat sheet to help understand the modern dating world. We all know that dating lingo can be tricky to decode, so the Dating Dictionary offers a simple way for Aussies to discuss their dating intentions and experiences as they head into a new year of dating.”

Tinder’s local dating expert Sera Bozza, says, “In the lead up to Dating Sunday, this is the perfect chance for users to press the reset button by refreshing their profile, lifting their chat game and aligning with the dating trends of 2025.

“I’m sharing five hacks for users to try as they enter this new era of dating from Pitch-me dating, Loud-looking your bio, Cherry bombing your chats, Embracing Hopecore and Trying Contra-Dating. This is the chance for Aussie daters to set the tone for a new year of better connections.”

Sera Bozza’s five cheat codes include:

  1. Pitch-me dating: In this trend personal branding meets romance. Highlight 3-4 core traits or hobbies that paint a picture of who you are: “Oh, they’re the coffee-obsessed adventurer” or “the chill gamer who loves dogs.”
  2. Loud-look your bio: Vague bios are out. “Looking for…” topped Tinder bios in 2024 because being clear works. Try the comedy ‘Rule of Three’: Two aligned traits followed by one that’s a super playful twist, the result? a bio that hooks and creates an instant opener.
  3. Cherry bomb your chats: Faster responses mean faster sparks, so keep your messages quick, light, and fun, aka cherry bombing!
  4. Embrace Hopecore: Dating doesn’t have to be a grind! Hopecore is all about leading with positivity and fun!
  5. Try Contra-Dating: Shake up your same moves with the same “type” - Go for the barista when you usually swipe on gym bros. Try the creative type when finance has been your go-to. Inviting your mates to Tinder Matchmaker to swipe for you helps you ease into contra-dating, with the support of the group chat!

The revamped Dating Dictionary is available on Tinder’s School of Swipe.
